The EXCEL community came together on Sunday, October 26th for the EXCEL Alumni Homecoming Brunch - a warm and lively gathering celebrating connection, growth, and the shared impact of mentorship. Hosted during Georgia Tech’s Homecoming weekend, the event welcomed alumni students and mentors, families, and staff to celebrate the enduring bonds built through the EXCEL Program.
Held at Scheller College of Business, the brunch opened with a heartfelt welcome from Ken Surdin, founding director of the EXCEL Program. Ken reflected on the program’s journey, from its founding vision to the thriving community it is today, and thanked alumni for continuing to shape the EXCEL experience long after graduation.
Guests also heard from Charles “Chuck” Hicks (CE ‘85), proud parent of EXCEL alum Sam Hicks and member of the EXCEL Advisory Board, who shared inspiring words about life after college and the importance of community support in helping graduates navigate new chapters with confidence and independence.
The program continued with remarks from Marnie Harris (BME ‘14), EXCEL Advisory Board member, and Ashley Pelton (Neuroscience ‘25), EXCEL Alumni Coordinator. Both have remained closely connected to EXCEL after graduation. Marnie spoke about how mentorship strengthened her view of leadership and the value of building lasting relationships, while Ashley reflected on her journey from serving on the EXCEL Student Advisory Board as a student to staying engaged as an alum. Their stories highlighted how giving back through mentorship enriches both current students and alumni alike.
Throughout the morning, alumni, current students, families, and staff enjoyed a buffet brunch, reconnected with old friends, and made new ones. Buzz, Georgia Tech’s beloved mascot, stopped by for photos and plenty of smiles.
“As EXCEL continues to grow its amazing community of support, events like this brunch remind me how meaningful it is to be part of something bigger than myself. What started as a way to help out became a chance to build real connections and friendships that last far beyond the program. Once you’re part of EXCEL, you’re always part of a family that supports and celebrates you.” – Cat Townsend, Neuroscience ‘24
