Biography

Manpreet Singh has been a tenured Associate Professor in Finance since August, 2025. He joined Georgia Tech as an Assistant Professor in 2016. His research interests include 1) law and policy issues in finance and 2) human capital, labor, and finance. His research papers have been published in top journals, including the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, and the Review of Finance. His work has been presented at over 70 domestic and international conferences, garnered 1,100 citations, and has been covered by several national news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, National Affairs, and CATO research briefs. He teaches corporate finance, corporate restructuring, and empirical research methods in undergraduate, MBA, and PhD programs. He received the Student Recognition of Excellence in Teaching: Annual CIOS Award, 2022. Dr. Singh received his PhD (Finance) in 2016 from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong. He holds a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Delhi.

Teaching Interests

Prof. Singh has taught undergraduate courses MGT 4066, Corporate Restructuring; MBA course MGT 6076, Valuing Technology Firms; and PhD course MGT 8803, Causal Methods in Empirical Research. He uses several techniques inside the classroom to connect the textbook’s abstract theoretical concepts and the real world. Additionally, he incorporates various methods to break up monotonous lectures, including videos, in-class experiments, problem-solving with online finance tools, and practical tips for Microsoft Excel. The PhD course is entirely hands-on. Students learn to use state-of-the-art empirical methods in management research disciplines outside of finance, including accounting, marketing, information systems, and strategy.

Research Interests

Prof. Singh's research broadly fits into two areas: 1) law and policy issues in finance and 2) human capital, labor, and finance. He studies interesting firm heterogeneities and provides new insights into economic mechanisms. His research often relies on state-of-the-art empirical methodologies and collects unique data to answer important economic policy-oriented research questions. In his work, he seeks to understand the causes and consequences of various governmental policies and legal and technological changes while also speaking to broader economic phenomena outside these changes. His research aims to uncover new evidence on corporate taxes, corporate tax subsidies, debt enforcement costs, e-commerce, and minimum wages. Further, his research tries to understand the economic impact of various policies and technological shifts on large and small businesses.
