Developing Innovative Solutions to Justice Problems

The Law, Data, and Design Lab is an interdisciplinary group of problem-solvers who are working to increase fairness, efficiency, transparency, and access to justice in the civil and criminal legal systems in the United States and around the world.

Our Objectives

Research

Our research is guided by open data and public interest technology principles: the idea that technology can and should be used for the public good, and that legal systems should be transparent, efficient, open, and unbiased.

Partnership

We partner with courts and government agencies, law firms and in-house legal departments, nonprofits and community organizations, and other groups to develop innovative solutions to justice problems.

Education

Our work involves undergraduate and graduate students who work together with faculty and other collaborators on multidisciplinary teams.

SCALES Open Court Data Platform

SCALES is a free, AI-powered online platform that assembles court records and extracts key information using Natural Language Processing, enabling anyone to analyze court operations and outcomes.

Court Congestion Project

This project uses process mining and AI-based simulation to analyze court delays and test the impact of policy, staffing, resource, and procedure changes on court congestion and other justice outcomes.

Decoding Legalese

This project is experimenting with using AI to create plain-language, accessible summaries of legal documents.

Structuring Sentencias

In collaboration with the Justice Innovation Lab of the Dominican Republic, this project is extracting key dates and events from judges' "sentencias" to create a model of litigation flows and court delays.

Lab students collaborated with a legal aid organization to extract data from medical debt court filings and build a database for analysis and advocacy.
