During my time as a Social Media Coordinator Intern for We Create Tech, I had the opportunity to work with an organization that is dedicated to opening doors for the next generation of technologists. We Create Tech focuses on supporting students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, by giving them access to workshops, mentorship, and hands-on experiences in tech. Being part of a mission that aligns so closely with my own values made this internship truly meaningful.

When I first joined the team, my main role was managing and improving the organization’s social media presence. This included designing digital flyers, sharing program updates, and highlighting student achievements. My goal was to create content that felt both informative and welcoming, something that would encourage students to get involved, feel supported, and see themselves in tech. Over time, I realized that social media was not just a tool for posting updates. It was a bridge between We Create Tech and the students we wanted to reach. That understanding shaped the way I approached every project.

One of the biggest parts of my internship was creating flyers and promotional content for our events. Whether it was a workshop, a speaker session, or a collaboration with another organization, I wanted each flyer to reflect We Create Tech’s energy and mission. I experimented with layouts, colors, and formats that would catch students’ attention online. It was rewarding to see students show up to events because they saw a post I created. It reminded me that design and communication can truly influence engagement.

I also had many chances to interact with students from different schools, both online and in person. Meeting students from outside my own campus helped me understand how wide the tech community really is. Students would ask about how to join the organization, what events we were hosting, or how they could get more involved. I enjoyed helping them join our community and answering questions that helped them feel welcome. These interactions pushed me to become more confident in communicating with others and representing an organization that is bigger than myself.

Throughout this internship, I learned several important skills. I improved my graphic design abilities, especially in creating promotional materials under real deadlines. I strengthened my communication skills, since I was often the one crafting captions, responding to questions, or sharing updates. I also became more comfortable using different social media platforms as professional tools instead of just personal ones. On top of that, I gained a better understanding of community engagement, how to reach people, how to keep them interested, and how to speak in a voice that matches an organization’s mission.

One memorable moment for me was seeing how excited students were when they discovered We Create Tech for the first time. In those moments, I could actually see the impact of the work I was doing behind the screen. I realized that social media work might seem simple at times, but it plays a big role in bringing people together and spreading opportunities.

Being part of We Create Tech changed the way I think about access in the tech world. It showed me how important it is for organizations to be intentional about uplifting voices that are often overlooked. It also helped me understand the power of representation and community support, especially for students who are trying to find their path in STEM.

This experience also influenced my future goals. I now know that I want to continue working in spaces where technology and community impact come together. Whether it is through design, social media, or another form of outreach, I want to keep creating work that opens doors for others the same way opportunities were opened for me.

Overall, my internship with We Create Tech was encouraging, fulfilling, and truly eye-opening. I am grateful for the chance to contribute to an organization that supports students like myself, and I will carry the lessons I learned here throughout my academic and professional journey.
