Steven A. Denning passed away April 27, 2026

Steven A. Denning, a visionary alumnus, philanthropist, and namesake of the Steven A. Denning Technology & Management (T&M) Program, passed away on Monday, April 27, leaving an enduring legacy at Georgia Tech and beyond. His life’s work reflects a deep belief in education as a force for opportunity, innovation, and service that continues to shape the lives of students.

A first-generation college student from Utah, Denning attended Georgia Tech on a Navy ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in industrial management in 1970. As a student, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as president of ANAK, a member of the Academic Senate, the Naval ROTC battalion commander, a resident assistant, and the founder of several student organizations. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy and earned a master’s in management from the Naval Postgraduate School before completing an MBA at Stanford.

Denning’s professional career was defined by bold thinking and principled leadership. After working at McKinsey & Company, he joined entrepreneur and philanthropist Charles Francis “Chuck” Feeney in 1980 to help build what would become General Atlantic LLC, now one of the world’s leading global growth equity investment firms. As Chairman, Denning helped guide the firm’s expansion while maintaining a philosophy that emphasized long-term impact and improvement of the human condition.

Yet it was Denning’s enduring connection to Georgia Tech that stands as one of his most profound contributions. Motivated by gratitude for the education that shaped his life, he made transformational philanthropic investments to ensure future students would be equipped to lead in an increasingly complex, global economy.

In 2007, the Steven A. Denning Technology & Management (T&M) Program, an innovative interdisciplinary initiative, launched through his endowed support. Designed to bridge the gap between technical expertise and business leadership, the program prepares students to work across disciplines, solve real-world problems, and lead diverse teams. His subsequent commitment in 2010, combined with matching funds, expanded the program’s impact and secured its long-term sustainability.

“Steven’s dedication to Georgia Tech was more than supporting a program — he built a community,” said Dean Anuj Mehrotra. “His dedication to interdisciplinary learning and student success shaped not only careers, but lives, and his influence will endure across Georgia Tech for decades to come.”

Since its inception, the Denning T&M Program has impacted more than 1,000 undergraduate students from six Colleges across Georgia Tech. Alumni consistently credit the program with preparing them to lead across disciplines, communicate effectively between technical and non‑technical teams, and approach complex global challenges with confidence and empathy.

The program’s hallmark experiences—corporate‑sponsored capstone projects, international study, cohort‑based learning, and lifelong mentorship—stand as a testament to Denning’s belief that education should be both rigorous and deeply human.

Bernard Kippelen, vice provost for International Initiatives and the Steven A. Denning Chair for Global Engagement, said, “Steven’s philanthropy established a lasting foundation for Georgia Tech’s global engagement, most notably through the endowed chair for Global Engagement held by our office, and the Denning Awards, which continue to elevate and incentivize international impact across the Institute.” Kippelen added, “His generosity helped embed global connectivity as a core dimension of Georgia Tech’s mission, enabling faculty, students, staff, and leadership to connect globally and expand the Institute’s reach and influence worldwide. Through his vision and kindness, Steven leaves a profound and enduring legacy — one that will continue to shape and inspire Georgia Tech’s international initiatives for generations to come.”

Beyond his philanthropy, Denning remained actively engaged with the Institute. He provided volunteer leadership and service on multiple boards including the Georgia Tech Foundation Board of Trustees, the Georgia Tech Advisory Board, the College of Computing Advisory Board, and the Campaign Georgia Tech Steering Committee. In recognition of his extraordinary service and impact, he received an honorary Ph.D. from Georgia Tech in 2019.

His legacy lives on in the students and alumni who support one another across cohorts and disciplines. That spirit is captured by undergraduate Saif Aslam, who reflected on the Denning T&M Program: “It’s not just the classes, the events, or the capstone. It’s the fact that we are all here to support each other every single day, whether that’s now, or in the future.”

Georgia Tech mourns Denning’s passing and extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be remembered with profound gratitude as an alumnus whose generosity and belief in interdisciplinary education transformed lives and strengthened the Institute for generations to come.
