Scheller Business Insights is a dynamic video series that highlights the innovative thought leadership of the esteemed faculty at the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business. At Scheller, we are committed to exploring ideas that educate and inform others about the profound impact of business on our lives and the world. In this episode, Alex Hsu, associate professor of finance, answers a critical question – are we in a recession? Over 50% of U.S. consumers believe the U.S. economy is currently in a recession (Forbes) despite an inflation rate of 3.4% reported in May 2024 – down from 9% in 2022.

The average American generally feels concerned and apprehensive about inflation, as it leads to higher costs of living and can erode purchasing power. Many worry about the impact on their household budgets, savings, and overall financial stability, while also being cautious about future economic uncertainty.

By taking measures such as adjusting interest rates and conducting Treasury bond market operations, the Federal Reserve is working to balance economic growth with price stability. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are broadly shared, helping to support employment and improve living standards.

Listen to Associate Professor Hsu discuss the current economic environment and whether or not the U.S. is experiencing a recession.
