Her Classroom Approach Builds Appreciation of Accounting.

Debby Turner, a John and Wendi Wells Associate Professor for Teaching Excellence at Scheller College, was featured in an article in by EMBAC (Executive MBA Council) titled ‘Accounting Comes to Life in EMBA Course.

Turner uses her passion for accounting and finance to win over some of her non-accounting students by showing real-world examples where stock buyouts and financial reporting becomes the basis for showing the success – or failure - of a publically traded company.

During her course, students have an ongoing project where they choose a company, complete a financial analysis, and compare the results to other companies. “Because they better understand the power of accounting, all of this project work helps students make greater contributions to their organizations,” notes Turner.

“They don’t have to love accounting,” continues Turner, but they have to appreciate accounting. I want them to be excited to learn more.” Turner, who has taught EMBA students for over 20 years, uses examples from headlines, exercises and reading assignments to bring accounting ad finance to life for her EMBA students.
