Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business and Morehouse School of Medicine Team Up on Dual M.D./MBA Degree
On Friday, September 21, Scheller College of Business Dean Maryam Alavi and Morehouse School of Medicine President and Dean Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice announced a dual-degree partnership between Scheller College of Business (SCOB) and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) that will enable MSM M.D. students to complete their medical and business degrees in just five years.
Announcement of the joint M.D./MBA program – nicknamed “White Coats and Yellow Jackets” – came at MSM’s 34th Convocation and White Coat & Pinning Ceremony held that same day. The event welcomed the 2018 incoming class of 164 first-year students in the Doctor of Medicine, Graduate Education in Biomedical Sciences, and Master of Public Health programs.
Under this partnership, MSM M.D. students can complete their MBA in one year, while enrolled in the M.D. program, without interrupting their career later. The program allows students to count 15 credit hours toward their MBA elective requirements, reducing the cost and time required to complete the MBA degree.
“Being a great physician isn’t just about understanding medicine and patient care—these days, it’s increasingly important to be a great business person, too,” said Montgomery Rice, also a Georgia Tech alumnus.
“Tomorrow’s physician must be business savvy, possess a lot of financial and managerial acumen, and be entrepreneurial in their mindset,” Alavi continued. “Uniquely positioned at the intersection of business and technology, Scheller College of Business curriculum not only develops managerial and financial acumen, but also develops tech savvy, innovative thinking.”
M.D./MBA students take 39 credit hours at Georgia Tech and transfer 15 credits of specific courses from the MSM M.D. program to complete the 54-credit-hour MBA curriculum. This program is designed to provide students the ability to complete both their M.D. and the MBA degrees in five years.
Students enroll and complete their first three years as MSM medical students before entering Scheller for a rigorous one-year, three-semester, MBA program prior to returning to MSM to complete their fourth year of medical studies.
The inaugural students in the unique program are Allison Rowell (BS Management 2001) and Ogechi Nwoko, with a 2020 graduation date for both degrees. Both students received full fellowships jointly funded by SCOB and MSM.
