A Conversation With Margarita

What motivated you to pursue an MBA?

I had reached a point in my nursing career where I knew I could give more. I didn’t feel challenged every day. I consistently saw so many issues in our processes and efficiency and felt that I couldn’t make a difference in my current position. This feeling of helplessness pushed me to seek a way to break out of this frustrating cycle.

Can you share any challenges you faced during your transition?

It’s been incredibly difficult – going from medicine to business is like learning a different language. I felt drained in a way I had never felt (even working 12-hour shifts in the emergency room). I struggled with the networking/politics of securing an internship. I really struggled with feeling like an imposter - do I really belong here? Do I have what it takes?

What skills from your medical training have you found most valuable in your MBA studies?

My work ethic and team player attitude. I know if I set my mind to something I can accomplish it. I may not understand the complexities of economics, but I know I will put in the work to get my assignments done and support my core group however I can.

Are there any gaps in knowledge you wish you had addressed before starting your MBA?

Absolutely. There is such a difference in jargon, so I wish I had just listened to some podcasts to prepare me for that. I also think brushing up on math would have been beneficial.

What career paths are you exploring based on your medical background and MBA?

I’m interested in a few different options – healthcare consulting, pharma, and just broad leadership development programs. I think I would be happy in any of those roles!

So far, how do you feel employers perceive you as a candidate with a medical background applying for business roles?

I’ve received a lot of feedback in coffee chats that my non-traditional background can bring different perspective and can be an asset. I have also gotten a lot of rejections for internships, so I think it’s a lot about leveraging your background and showing that your skills are transferable and kind of “selling” that you are able to pivot and work hard to be an asset.

Are there any resources you found particularly helpful during your journey?

Ashley McRae was actually a nurse in the department next to mine in the same hospital and she was/is an amazing resource. Andrew Chetcuti transitioned from being a physical therapist to a consultant and he has also been a great encourager and had a wealth of knowledge to share with me. Having people in my corner has been the reason I’ve made it this far.
