A Conversation With Kayla

What inspired you to pursue an MBA while continuing to work full-‑time? 

I began to get involved in shaping the strategic direction of data initiatives at Collins Aerospace and was frequently asked to demonstrate value realization to justify future investments. I wanted to better articulate the business value of technical data analytics work and apply those insights directly and immediately. 

What challenges did you encounter balancing work responsibilities with the demands of the MBA program? 

It's challenging to balance group project work in the MBA. Everyone has very demanding schedules, and trying to find a time that aligns means some early Saturday or late Sunday meetings. I’ve found it’s important to intentionally create downtime to ensure I can recharge and show up for work and school in the way I want to. 

How has your engineering background shaped the way you approach your MBA coursework and class discussions? 

My engineering background was key in shaping how I approach learning. It taught me how to efficiently allocate study time across classes and prioritize certain types of work earlier, which has helped me feel more prepared to manage the dual demands of work and school.  

Are there particular concentrations, electives, or certificates that you’ve found especially valuable as a working professional with an engineering background?  

I took coursework focused on strategies to support a digital enterprise, which introduced me to how to effectively tell the story of digital transformation initiatives and persuade stakeholders. My engineering background emphasized tactical execution as an individual contributor, so gaining experience in developing and driving strategic roadmaps was especially valuable.  

Which engineering‑based skills (analytical, technical, or problem‑solving) have been most beneficial during your MBA studies?  

My critical thinking and problem-solving skills have proven to be the most beneficial in the program. They apply in nearly every situation, whether tackling a homework problem, approaching a group project, or figuring out how to balance responsibilities between school and work.  

Were there any knowledge gaps — such as finance, leadership, or marketing — that you wish you had strengthened before starting the program?  

I wish I had known more about accounting before starting the program, as that knowledge would have served me earlier in my career by helping me better understand quarterly earnings reports and other financial statements.  

How have you built and expanded your professional network while managing both work and school? 

I've intentionally tried to engage in networking opportunities offered by Scheller. I participate in multiple clubs including the Technology Club, Women in Business, and Blacks in Business. Additionally, I served as vice president of finance for the Graduate Evening Management Students (GEMS) student leadership board. These engagements have allowed me to broaden my network and build lasting connections with other students in the program. 

What types of career paths or advancement opportunities are you considering as you combine your engineering experience with your MBA training?  

I am looking to grow as a strategic technical leader within my company by combining my engineering and data background with my MBA. Being able to understand technical concepts and clearly explain them to a nontechnical audience is a critical skill for advancement and for driving enterprise direction within my area of work.  

Based on your experience so far, how do employers view candidates who bring an engineering background into business focused roles? 

Employers truly value candidates that can traverse between technical and business concepts in roles that require focus on both. Candidates with an engineering background also provide logical, concise, and forward-looking perspectives that create an advantage. 

What advice would you offer to other working professionals in engineering who are considering part-time or executive MBA programs? 

My advice would be to look at the focus areas offered by your target MBA programs so you can align your goals with your future career path.  

Have any specific resources (books, podcasts, courses, mentors, or professional groups) been particularly helpful in your journey? 

Andre Calmon’s course, Business Strategies for Sustainability, was one of my favorites. It provided exactly the knowledge I was seeking as I explored a shift toward using data to support sustainable aviation. I have also begun having conversations with leaders at my company to better understand their career journeys and the decisions they made along the way, helping me gain perspective as I continue to shape my own path.  

Which emerging trends in the engineering or technology sectors do you think MBA students — especially working professionals — should be aware of?  

The most visible emerging trend across industries right now is AI, but what MBA students and others should understand is the underlying infrastructure, architecture, and data maturity required to generate AI insights that truly transform business operations. As large language models become increasingly central to AI deployment, a foundational need is understanding semantic ontology and how to provide the contextual data required for meaningful, reliable outcomes.  

In what ways are you leveraging your engineering expertise in your current role as you grow your business leadership skills? 

Engineering is at the core of Collins Aerospace. I continue to use my engineering expertise to connect the data needs of my enterprise to the business strategies required to support them.
