What inspired you to pursue an MBA while continuing to work full‑time?
Obtaining an MBA has always been a goal of mine, but I found myself waiting for the "right" time. Eventually, I realized there would never be a perfect season between work and a busy family life, so it became a now-or-never decision. I wasn't interested in stepping away from my career for school, so the Executive MBA format appealed to me. It allows me to stay fully engaged at work during the week while dedicating focused time to school on weekends.
What challenges did you encounter balancing work responsibilities with the demands of the MBA program?
Time management has been the biggest challenge. I block dedicated time after work, often after my kids are in bed, and on weekends to complete coursework. The most difficult weeks are when work travel overlaps with assignment deadlines, since evenings are often committed. Planning and working in advance whenever possible has been critical to staying ahead.
How has your engineering background shaped the way you approach your MBA coursework and class discussions?
Coming from a civil engineering background in a service-based industry gives me a different lens than many classmates who’ve come from product-based companies. Engineering trained me to think analytically and systematically, which has been helpful in breaking down complex business cases.
At the same time, MBA coursework has stretched me. Engineering education is often technical and solution-focused, with clear right-and-wrong answers. In business discussions, there are often multiple "right" answers. Learning to articulate and defend a position has been one of my biggest growth areas.
Are there any particular concentrations, electives, or certificates that you’ve found especially valuable as a working professional with an engineering background?
I haven’t reached my elective courses yet, but I've found a lot of value in what many would consider the foundational courses, including Accounting, Communications, and Marketing. As someone with a technical background, gaining a stronger understanding of these core courses has helped me connect technical execution with overall business performance.
Which engineering-based skills (analytical, technical, or problem-solving) have been most beneficial during your MBA studies?
Analytical thinking and structured problem-solving have been especially valuable. Engineering trains you to define the problem clearly before jumping to solutions, and that mindset translates directly into business case analysis, financial modeling, and strategic decision-making. Comfort with quantitative analysis has also made data-driven coursework feel approachable.
Were there any knowledge gaps — such as finance, leadership, or marketing — that you wish you had strengthened before starting the program?
I haven't experienced any knowledge gaps that have prevented me from engaging with the material. Executive MBA cohorts are diverse, and there isn't an expectation that anyone enters with mastery in every area. Everyone brings their own unique strengths, and the program is designed to build new competencies while leveraging these strengths.
How have you built and expanded your professional network while managing both work and school?
The cohort model has been invaluable. Because we spend time together in class and team projects, relationships develop naturally. I've also leaned into small-group work and peer collaboration, as those settings often create the strongest professional connections. Balancing work and school means I have to be intentional, but I view networking as part of the learning experience, not simply an added task.
What types of career paths or advancement opportunities are you considering as you combine your engineering experience with your MBA training?
I'm interested in roles that blend technical execution and strategic leadership, as I see these as positions where I can align operational performance, financial discipline, and long-term growth strategy. Combining engineering rigor with business strategy creates opportunities to lead multidisciplinary teams and scale organizations thoughtfully and sustainably.
Based on your experience so far, how do employers view engineers in business roles?
I’ve seen firsthand how valuable an engineering background can be in business roles. Although I’m no longer practicing engineering, I work in a business leadership role within an engineering firm, and that foundation helps me understand the technical realities behind financial and strategic decisions.
Employers appreciate the analytical rigor and problem-solving mindset engineers bring, and when paired with business training, it allows you to move fluidly between technical teams and company-level strategy.
What advice would you offer to other working professionals in engineering who are considering part-time or executive MBA programs?
Don't wait for perfect timing, as it likely won't come! Be realistic about the commitment, build support systems at home and at work, and be disciplined about your calendar. Most importantly, embrace the opportunity fully. An MBA is something you'll only do once, and it's a unique season of growth. It will stretch you beyond technical expertise into communication, influence, and strategic thinking — and that stretch is where the transformation happens.
Have any specific resources (books, podcasts, courses, mentors, or professional groups) been particularly helpful in your journey?
The cohort model has been one of the greatest resources in the program. Working closely with teammates from varied professional backgrounds strengthens not only technical understanding but also communication and collaboration skills. The exposure to different industries and leadership approaches has broadened my business perspective far beyond my own experience.
Which emerging trends in the engineering or technology sectors do you think MBA students—especially working professionals—should be aware of?
AI-driven decision support, data integration across organizations, and increasing demand for operational efficiency are reshaping both engineering and business environments. Additionally, firms are under pressure to scale responsibly while managing talent pipelines and infrastructure investment. Understanding how technology, data, and financial strategy intersect will be critical for future leaders.
In what ways are you leveraging your engineering expertise in your current role as you grow your business leadership skills?
My engineering background helps me understand the operational realities of the technical teams I support. I can translate between technical execution and financial or strategic goals, which strengthens alignment across functions. As I develop my business leadership skills, I’m building on that technical credibility while expanding my capacity to drive integration, accountability, and long-term planning.
