Scheller College of Business Professor Peter Swire Cited in Article on Equifax Data Breach Charges

 

In WABE Newsrecent article “U.S. Charges 4 Chinese Military Members in 2017 Breach at Atlanta-based Equifax,” Scheller College of Business Professor of Law, Peter Swire spoke on the recent identification of the Equifax hackers who are part of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The attack on Equifax, a credit reporting agency, included the poaching of personal data from 145 million people. The company reaching a $700 million settlement in which the majority went to affected customers. Read the full article here.

Swire, a privacy and cybersecurity expert and associate director for Policy at the Institute for Information Security and Privacy, discussed how the identification of the hackers may now send a message to the Chinese government that the  U.S. is capable and willing to go after China’s state-sponsored hacking of U.S. data.

“It raises cybersecurity up on the list of negotiating issues. It shows that the U.S. government is really concerned here and that China shouldn’t do this with impunity,” said Swire.
