MBA Students Tour Tech Square Innovation Centers

Georgia Tech Scheller College MBA students got a first-hand view of innovative technologies in their own backyard on Friday, Aug. 19. New MBA students concluded a successful two-week orientation with the addition of a tour of nine innovation centers located in Technology Square.

Scheller College and Georgia Tech enjoy a strong relationship with the 13 corporate innovation centers that call Tech Square home. Students toured the following centers: Panasonic Innovation Center, thyssenkrupp Elevator Research and Innovation Center, AT&T Drive Studio, The Home Depot Technology Center, Southern Company Energy Innovation Center, Delta Air Lines Innovation Center, Anthem Innovation Studio, Emerson Innovation Center, and Flashpoint.

“The tour of the Tech Square innovation ecosystem served as the capstone for our students’ two-week orientation session, and many students commented that the experience was the highlight of the 10 days,” said Brian Jennings, associate dean of MBA programs and executive education at Scheller College of Business. “Hopefully, we were successful in ‘activating’ one another’s interest levels in further partnering. We look forward to the opportunity to deepen our relationships with the centers.”

With the highest density of corporate innovators, startups, academic researchers, and students in the entire southeastern U.S., Tech Square offers a tremendous benefit to both students and corporations alike.

“The Anthem Innovation Studio is a place that helps drive our goal to transform health care and deliver value to consumers by expanding meaningful collaborations to manage the cost of care, strengthening our engagement with physicians to enhance affordability and developing superior solutions that deliver a better, more personalized health care experience for consumers,” said David Crean, Innovation Leader at Anthem, Inc.

Crean added that by being in Tech Square, Anthem is able to tap into Georgia Tech’s existing research and technology, cultivate strategic relationships and develop opportunities for collaborating with other technology and innovation companies in the area.

“As the first Fortune 50 health benefits company with an innovation center here in Technology Square, Anthem is looking forward to channeling some of Georgia Tech’s amazing talent into great internships and jobs at Anthem – hosting Scheller MBA students is an opportunity to meet future innovators.”

The corporations in Tech Square are engaging Scheller College students during their time at Georgia Tech and beyond. Students are able to practice their ability to lead innovation and drive change through real-world projects as part of internship and research work with the potential for long-term career options after graduation.

MBA students visit Home Depot in Tech Square.

“The Home Depot has always provided revolutionary solutions to home improvement and the retail industry,” said Anthony Gregorio, Senior Manager IT – Innovation Center, The Home Depot. “The Home Depot Technology Center is a space where we work toward our goal of differentiating ourselves and providing exceptional service to our customers, associates, communities, and shareholders. Our location in Technology Square allows us access to innovative talent and ideas at Georgia Tech and other pioneering companies in the neighborhood.”

Scheller College’s work with the innovation centers is one of the many experiential learning opportunities that help students build their network and put knowledge into practice. During the visit, centers asked students why they chose Georgia Tech for their MBA studies and they said that Scheller College’s immersive track options like technology innovation, leveraging analytics, and leading digital transformation, differentiated the program from other business schools.
