Scheller Graduate Named among Nation’s Best Executive MBAs

Kevin Smith, Senior Commercial Finance Manager with The Coca-Cola Company and a Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business EMBA graduate has been named to Poets & Quants' Best Executive MBAs 2015. Chosen as one of the 30 “best-and brightest” Executive MBAs, Kevin was selected for his distinguished professional achievements, academic prowess, and personal accomplishments.

A news organization dedicated to in-depth coverage and analysis of business schools and graduate business programs, Poets and Quants surveyed graduates from top-ranked Executive MBA programs in the U.S., as well as twelve international universities. EMBA graduates from Cornell, Duke, MIT, Notre Dame, UCLA, University of North Carolina and University of Virginia were also named to the Best Executive MBAs 2015 list.

A senior manager with a Fortune 100 company, Smith says he wasn’t looking for just any MBA. He was looking for an MBA with global clout, brand recognition, and a strong understanding of international business. His search ultimately led him to choose Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business for his degree. “I wanted to affiliate myself with a university that has a strong brand, not just regionally or nationally, but globally as well.”

Smith additionally chose to earn his degree in Scheller’s Executive MBA program. “I aspire to work internationally and the university offers a [EMBA] program that focuses on Global Business. Earning these credentials makes me even more prepared for the challenge when the opportunity presents itself.” A 17-month MBA program, Scheller offers two specialized EMBA degrees ---MBA in Management of Technology and MBA in Global Business. Each program provides a traditional MBA foundation followed by a specialized curriculum.

One of the things Smith discovered while earning his degree was how applicable his newly gained knowledge was in the workplace. “I enjoyed the fact that I could learn a new concept in class one week and find myself applying the concept the following week. In addition, the students who were in my class had diverse backgrounds and in many instances could share their on the job application of a concept. This made classroom learning very active.”

Scheller’s Associate Dean of MBA Programs, Brian Jennings, is not surprised that Smith has earned such high recognition on a national level. “Kevin exemplifies the ideal EMBA student. He brought his business knowledge, skills and experience to an accelerated academic program that provided him the growth opportunities to excel and acquire the additional skills and acumen necessary to achieve whatever career goal he chooses.”

Maryam Alavi, Dean of the Scheller College of Business at Georgia Tech, concurs. “Kevin astutely realized in today’s ever-changing business world, one of the best ways to advance a career and prepare for opportunities is by attaining an MBA. Kevin exemplifies Scheller’s caliber of Executive MBA student and we look forward to his continued growth and success.”

Sharing his most memorable memorable moments during the Executive MBA program at Georgia Tech, Smith says, “Presenting the EMBA Global Business Capstone project to the faculty and sponsors and having this euphoric feeling afterwards. We did it! After two semesters – and many late night meetings – we delivered a product that we could be proud of. My other most memorable moment was graduation day – being on the floor, walking into the auditorium, and then looking up to see my family who supported me through this whole journey. It was truly remarkable.”
