ODayThe Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business welcomes Stephen O' Day, Partner at Smith, Gambrell and Russell.

Mr. O’Day leads the Environmental Section and the Sustainability Practice Group at SGR. He studied Civil Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and earned a B.A.  degree, summa cum laude, in political science from Furman University in 1976. He received his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1979. While at Harvard, Mr. O’Day served as Chairman of the Harvard Environmental Law Society. Mr. O’Day has been named as a “Georgia Super Lawyer” in environmental law since the inception of that list, by Atlanta Magazine and Law & Politics Media, Inc. He has also been named by Chambers USA as one of “America’s Leading Lawyers for Business” in environmental law, again since the inception of that publication, and as a Best Environmental Lawyer in Corporate Counsel magazine. Mr. O’Day recently was given the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s highest honor, its River Guardian award, for years of community service in protecting the river providing Metropolitan Atlanta’s water supply, and also received the James S. Dockery, Jr., Southern Environmental Leadership Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center.  He was also recognized with the Ogden Doremus Award for Excellence in Environmental Law.  In 2014, Mr. O’Day received the Award for Service to the Profession of Environmental Law presented by the State Bar of Georgia, Environmental Law Section, of which he formerly served as Vice Chairman.

Mr. O’Day is now serving on the Green Chamber of the South Foundation Board as well as the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance Board.  He is active in Litigation, Environment, Energy and Resources, and Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Sections of the American Bar Association.

Mr. O’Day’s practice includes environmental and toxic tort litigation, regulatory issues under all state and federal environmental laws, environmental issues in transactional work including corporate mergers and acquisitions and real estate transactions, OSHA compliance and litigation, and sustainability industry transactions, agreements, and client advice including siting, development, construction, permitting, operation and sale of renewable energy projects and renewable energy.

The Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business was founded in 2013 to act as a catalyst and connector, bringing together students, research faculty, companies, and entrepreneurs to create an environment where business-driven solutions to sustainability challenges can take shape and thrive. In all, Scheller provides students unparalleled breadth in environmental sustainability, ethics, corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, and values-based leadership.
