Gary is recognized as one of the most globally experienced technology CEOs, having lived and worked on three continents. Smith began serving as Chief Executive Officer of Ciena in May, 2001, in addition to his existing responsibilities as President and Director, positions he has held since October 2000. During his tenure at Ciena, Gary has successfully navigated the company through multiple global recessions, intense competitive dynamics and significant technology disruptions while building Ciena from a nascent challenger brand to a $2.5B global leader in network technology. Prior to his current role, his positions with the company included Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales. Mr. Smith joined Ciena in November, 1997, as Vice President of International Sales.

From 1995 through 1997, Mr. Smith served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for INTELSAT. He has previously served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Cray Communications, Inc.

Mr. Smith is a member of President Obama's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, and serves on the board of directors for Avaya Inc. and CommVault Systems, Inc. He is a member of the Wall Street Journal CEO Council, serves on the Wake Forest University Advisory Council for the Center for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, and participates in initiatives with the Center for Corporate Innovation. Mr. Smith received his M.B.A. from Ashridge Management College, United Kingdom. In his spare time, he is a big Crossfit advocate and competitive athlete.

Smith will speak at Georgia Tech's IMPACT Speaker Series on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

About the Impact Speaker Series:

Since 2002, the IMPACT Speaker Series has brought highly successful business leaders from a variety of industries to campus to share their experiences and give advice to students and other entrepreneurs on topics ranging from "building a venture around intellectual capital" to "successful entrepreneurship in large organizations" and "socially responsible leadership". The weekly series provides Georgia Tech students, alumni and the Atlanta business community an opportunity to network and learn from successful entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and notable business and non-profit leaders. The lecture series is sponsored by the Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship

The series is free and open to the public, and reservations are not required.
