Leadership & Collaboration

Leading and collaborating with a strategic purpose are key capabilities in successful organizations. All organizations are comprised of three types of resources: financial and material capital, intellectual property, and people. Many contemporary organizations are finding that the people they employ – and the knowledge and expertise these people hold – are their best source of competitive advantage.

With this concentration, students will develop an ability to lead in formally appointed positions and collaboratively in groups and teams. The concentration provides the capability for seizing opportunities to exercise leadership and collaborate within your strategically chosen function – such as supply chain, finance, marketing – or develop your ability to be a business partner within the area of leading human capital (e.g. human resources, organizational development, change implementation).

The courses will survey key topics that are related to managing people in organizations, including leadership, teams, strategic human resource management, etc. This concentration will give you a better understanding of how employees can function effectively and efficiently across different contexts such as teams and organizations. You will have plenty of opportunities for reflection, study, debate, and practice through which you can learn about leadership and enhancing effectiveness – both your own and that of other individuals and groups in organizations.

Students pursuing a concentration in leadership and collaboration should complete nine credit hours (three courses) from the following electives.

MGT 6107  Leadership and Organizational Change (3 credit hours)
Learn challenges and methods of leading through change. Course includes change simulations. Explores change management in mature organizations. Discusses what makes an effective change agent. Examples of change include rapid growth or business turnaround.

MGT 6110  Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (3 credit hours)
Explore the process of bargaining and negotiation. Learn and develop your own conflict resolution and bargaining style. Emphasis on negotiation through exercise and role plays. Understand a spectrum of situations managers face that call for effective bargaining.

MGT 6113  Nonprofit Team Consulting Projects (3 credit hours)
Teams work on a project developed in consultation with a not-for-profit organization, and present results to organizations and boards.

MGT 6119  Leading Teams (3 credit hours)
Working in teams is an integral part of organizational life. The purpose of this course is to prepare you to succeed as an effective leader, manager, and member of teams. Accordingly, this course is designed around two objectives. First, it will introduce you to the critical theories, concepts, and frameworks that can be used to successfully identify the threats and opportunities teams face and improve team performance. Second, it will create opportunities for you to design effective teams, implement effective team processes, and practice leading and managing dynamic teams. This course promises to provide insight into what separates successful teams from the many that fail, as well as give you greater confidence in your own ability to lead and contribute to enhanced team performance.

MBA concentrations and immersive tracks are optional. You have the flexibility to take electives in any combination of areas.
